Solitude 05:19
Instrumental
2.
Through night descending, twilight’s time Come floating through the dark Just one last time I breathe the evening’s glow Catching in both arms stretched so strangely out The light now gone again Colours change, come breathing through the dark Cos I’ve seen through a vision of you Now I can’t seem to try I’ve seen that it’s swallowing you And it’s so deep inside And stars poke through clouds now And drink up the sky But they’re swallowed too, I’m last Left alone to swim beneath the dark For I’ve seen through a vision of you Now I can’t seem to try I’ve seen that it’s swallowing you And it’s so deep inside

Approach 03:35
Somewhere there’s something I can know How could I tell if I was near? Felt I was moving in her mind Then there was nothing left but fear At times I need to feel I’ve tried To be her breathing in the night To fill myself before I go Remember all that I call home Now as though shelter helps no more A feeling’s echoed in her stare Knowing no longing for before I step from warmth into night air Wander aimless with the stream Pure thought still just a dream
4.
I could never see why all the stars in the sky Shone so softly when I was with you And I could never see why all the light in your eyes Could touch me but could never touch you And reflecting the autumn and water and rain Was there something that I couldn’t feel? So still it deceived me, an ocean so deep It’s drowning you, drowning me too Whatever we do
5.
The Beach 03:24
I saw the trees fall down, felt the touch of someone’s hand I went to where the water fell and found I couldn’t stand But no-one saw me, no-one knew me, no-one felt the pain No-one knows the pleasures when you’re drowning in the rain Walking through the forest I came across the sea Wide and cold and blue, it surrounded me And sitting on my island I looked up at the sky And squinted at the sand which fell about my eyes And turning round I saw you there Your face was drawn and white And that was when the sky turned dark So quickly came the night Bent down in the sand I reached to touch the horrid ocean And felt the touch of terror in your unspoken emotion
6.
It’s falling away, still grey Shroud drops, morning slip away Serenity changes now as before To images growing intense, still unsure If all that remains might well fade Youth squandered, time to defend The fleeting hours of the morning light Seeping through open cracks of sky A city gapes round me, deep inside Through streets with unnerving windowless walls My body, first swirling then curving, could fall And then it should die in little time Truth honoured, time to pretend The evening hours won’t turn into night Now that I turn to find the sky empty How could I know the cracks would all fade? Scale the walls, the city has kept me This is the truth of it all
7.
With You 07:52
I sit and dream before night Of clouds that move slowly through grey and white I dream of blue in the fading light And no-one will know how I love this night With you Your voice is so soft in the evening sounds A tune in my head that goes round around And lifts me so high as I lay on the ground With you
8.
She falls enchanted by a sound That seeps from memory, fills the empty hall As children laughing gather round Amelia’s green eyes mirror shelter gone Time slipped, with it security Feelings mingled, once purity Now that she’s glimpsed eternity Amelia remains silent in the hall And rising from amid the hum of past-time come again And flailing in cold grey stone rooms she fights the constant strain Watch as a life fades, stark emptiness remains Amelia turns but nothing greets her now Time slipped, with it security Feelings mingled, once purity Now that she’s glimpsed eternity Amelia remains silent in the hall
9.
Em68 02:35
Still searching downward despite you and me Fearing, still needing, still striving to see Nothing We never mention nor question inside Could it be darkness not softness we’d find?
10.
Planetary 02:47
It’s funny how the night’s breath Encircled me in warmth when The flames of a sky full of stars shone cold Placid summer, evening smells I watched transfixed as cool white swelled Swallowed whole by a star’s shine, I flew I’ve felt immensity surging around Shocked by indifference, a clear note resounds Enshrouds Journey’s end, now re-explained The universe encroached and stayed And spirits madly danced on new space in my mind Sanity seems pointless, strange I’ve lost belief, no faith regained Looking from this freedom to your life, I laugh I’ve felt immensity surging around Shocked by indifference, a clear note resounds Enshrouds

about

Movement were a group of four callow youths who broke into the Adelaide scene in 1991 thanks to the auspices of the Mandelbrot Set and Triple M (now 3D) radio.

Aged 17-18 when they played their first pub shows, they’d have to hide from security when ID checks occurred and, to make matters worse, with key songwriters Ben Winch and Reed Cathcart hailing from the Hills, they never knew quite how to comport themselves in the big smoke.

Still, with the charm and enthusiasm of drummer Dexter Campos, a Manilla ex-pat with a love of Australian alternative music, and the natural grace of classically-trained keyboardist Kate Eckermann to smooth the edges, they made a decent stab at regional stardom for a year or so before the rot set in, playing every venue that’d have them while they dreamt of a record deal to whisk them away across the horizon.

Since their break-up in ’92, Movement members have played in Solar, Luzonne, the Love Rustlers, Jackrabbit, Southern Baptist Rebellion, No Through Road, Blood Plastic, the COQ Bros and Shadow History, to audiences in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, London, Manchester and Vancouver. Dexter Campos records and performs solo as Dental Jams, Reed “Bleed” Cathcart as Bleed and Ben Winch as Light Traveller.

Probably always a bigger deal in the Hills than on the plains, Movement are remembered by a few hardcore faithful who badger individual members for renditions of “Solitude” at birthdays, weddings and New Year’s Eve parties.

Movement were:

Ben Winch - guitar/vocals
Reed Cathcart - bass
Dexter Campos - drums
Kate Eckermann - keyboards

Chris Jones appears on Amelia Remains and Em68 (keyboards) and Planetary (guitar/backing vocals)
